The Little Mermaid

Whoa- this is a throw back.
I last saw it maybe... ooo golly, 15 years ago.
But never notived that there are soo many things wrong with Disney movies (and Fairy Tales for that matter). Where to begin..

As a young girl watching this movie, I now think that-

-Being rebelious (read: a little shit) against my father is the best thing to do.
-Making deals with bad people to get what I want is totally fine.
-Disregarding my family to get what I want is even better.
-That men are simple minded creatures and if I sing to them, they will love me forever.
-In the end, everything I do is justified and it'll work out in the end.

All the above will make me live happily ever after with a man I have known for 3 days- and technically never had a conversation with.

Wow. All the great morals I have learnt today....

Other things Disney has taugh me ...

-All Princes are attainable and vain. To be in complete control of them, you need to look really pretty, smile a whole bunch and never talk to them. (dancing and singing skills required)
-No matter how lovely you are, there are always people trying to kill you.
-Shoes are tailor made. No one else will ever fit your shoes but you.
-Don't take drugs: Get high on life and sing yourself happy.
-Weddings can be pulled off flawlessly with a days notice.
-Kissing is totally allowed- as long as there is a big crowd to cheer you on.
-As long as you are pretty, good things will happen to you.
-Singing makes everything better.

Thanks Disney.

THE WIZARD OF OZ

Well, that was weirdly disappointing but still thoroughly enjoyable.

It is a rather unsettling feeling, watching your beloved childhood movies to find that there is WAY more to them than you remember (cared to noticed) or even, in this case, that the ending was a totally let down.

I don't know why, but I remember the Wizard to actually be cool and have magically powers. But wow, I must have been so distracted by the colours and music to follow the storyline.
For him to say "oh the men in my life that are smart' and 'the men who have courage own these items, soooo logically (instead of anything magically cool) if you own them too, you'll have these attributes also"
blah blah blah

WHY is this film so loved??

Here's why- and its the only reason I love it too- the costumes and characters.

Next Halloween I am dressing as the Witch of the North, her dress and pretty crown looks like so much fun to wear. Sweep around rooms, Poke people with my super long wand, Struggle up stairs -LOADS of fun :)

AND I truly believe that Bert Lahr who plays the Cowardly Lion, should have got an Oscar! I love him with all my heart :)
On the other hand I would run away from Dorothy, (the character) She is SUPER-DUPER annoying.

I enjoyed the film and it was good to catch up on what I didn't remember but I probably won't watch it for another 15 years..
I'll just think about it and dream my little dreams...

STAND BY ME

Directed by Rob Reiner, and staring Wil Wheaton, River Pheonix (omg) Corey Felman, Jerry O'Connell and Kieffer Sutherland.
Based on the novel "The Body" by Stephen King.

I feel a bit left behind but I had never seen this film, heard what's its about, known who was in it OR that it came from a novel....Pathetic, I know.
I was quiet (happily) shocked when I saw that River Phoenix was in it. I know how he had died outside the Viper Room, but sadly I don't know ANYTHING else about him... and now I am frantically googling him because I am now in Love with him.
If he looked that gorgeous at that age,(14??) what would he have looked like now.. drewl ! and more importantly, what roles would he have played? How great would he be now? .... Sigh we will never know.

The movie itself, well I almost expected more to happen.
I wanted the foretelling of the body he had seen at 12, to be someone other than the obvious body that they were searching for, or for them to have more challenges getting there... its just seemed too simple.
I accept that it is more about the journey of young men learning about themselves and the friendships that they have. But it didn't make me to happy. (maybe because I cannot relate as I am female)

And also, the ending- where Chris dies by a knife to the neck in a burger joint, after becoming a lawyer and turning his life around - is told in the most matter-of-fact way and there is not really anything further..
Did the Director Run out of time? or just didn't want to go into too much detail as it was a touchy subject...
Very Sad indeed...

I enjoyed the movie but I am going to have to say that River is more memorable. I'll be ooooggling his many talents before I watch this film again.

The Note Book

After many girl friends giving me grief for not having seen this movie, When i found it on the flat shelf I thought I should give it it's chance.

And now, I'm a very dehydrated person.
After drewling over Ryan for the first 3/4's of the movie, I then cried the last quarter.

Also seeing my Grandpop have Elzimers, It was a-whole-another-level of sad.
The fact that Old Noah was so commited to her and reminding her of who she was and what she was to him was amazing. It takes alot for someone to do that.
When my pop passed away, my Nana said it was like he had died 5 years prior as the man she knew was no longer there. She had grieved enough before his actual death that it was a nice thing for him to finally be at peace.

The last time I saw him, it was a good day. But only in his mind.
He was talking to me as if I was his childhood friend and telling me of the afternoon we had down by the river; with me, eleven, nodding along.
Not cool.

OMG what a sad movie but it makes me want to grow old and be so completely in love like that, Damn it!
Matthew- you have a lot to live up to.

Now the Movie itself, Rachel McAdams Character actally bugged me - she was just sooo giggly and annoying. I donno; she did good but I wouldn't be her friend...
And actually now looking back on it, it pissed me off that his friends dies with nothing else mentioned about him...  :(

But OMG I will be watching this again. Really liked it. Very cool, very convincing, very sad but refreahingly happy.

Snow White and The Huntsman

Originally Written by the BROTHERS GRIMM.

A long time ago, a child was born to a queen and king and she was called Snow White.  When the queen died, the king married again.  This new queen was wicked and hated Snow white.  The queen gave orders that Snow White was to be treated as a servant.

Snow White grew very beautiful and one day a Prince riding by, saw her at work and fell in love with her.
The queen was beautiful too, and every day she asked her Magic Mirror, "Who is the fairest in the land?" and the mirror always answered, "You are the fairest one of all".
But one day the mirror answered Snow White was the fairest in the land, and in a rage the queen gave orders to one of her Huntsmen to take Snow White into the woods and kill her.
The Huntsman had a kind heart and couldn't do the deed so told her to run away.  She fled into the woods where Seven little dwarfs lived.  Their house was small and strange.
Snow White entered the little house and finding it very untidy, started to clean up.  Upstairs she found seven little beds.  She was very tired and stretching out on one of the beds, was soon asleep.
When the Dwarfs came home they were surprised to find Snow White and after some argument, decided to let her stay.  She promised to cook and look after them.
The Queen discovered where Snow White was living and disguising herself as a witch, took a poisoned apple and set out for the Dwarfs cottage.  She gave Snow White the poisoned apple to eat and as soon as she bit the apple, she sank into unconsciousness.
Thinking she was dead, the Dwarfs built a glass coffin and put her in it. For days she lay in the forest in her glass coffin.  One day, the Prince was riding through the forest looking for Snow White and found her.  He leaned over and kissed her.  She opened her eyes and sat up with a smile. Everyone was happy.  The Prince took Snow White to his palace where they were married and lived happily ever after.

This NEW and IMPROVED Movie stars Kristen Stuart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron Directed by Rupert Sanders.

It's quite a dark twist on the tale but looks super epic. For me, I've never like Smiley, Happy, drown-myself-with-love endings so this should be right up my (dark) alley.

First, there were times when the characters portrayed were too (...lets say) Disney; too over done. Charlize had a rough time. For most of her scenes she had to be 'Mentally Unstable' so props to her but there were many where I forgot she was a character and saw her as an actor.
Secondly, Did anyone notice the seriously long drawn out last frame of the film? awkward...

BUT (and this is a Kim K one) what made me enjoy it so, was the twist that the Huntsman was her 'Dashing Prince' and the actual Prince was a dork... I liked that they were confident enough to change the most 'Disney' thing about this type of movie.

I can't firgure out if it helped of hindered the watching experience, but I watched the making/behind the scenes of Snow White & the Huntsman a week before.
I was watching out for certain costumes worn by 'Raveena' (Charlize). A full cape made of feathers, a metal disc-linked coat, hooked nail rings, a wedding dress made of bones; I am pretty sure I missed most of what was going on in those scenes.... Ooops.

I really did enjoy it though; Top marks for entertaining, But I won't be buying the DVD any time soon...

WHAT LIST ?

First I need to have a list of movies considered the 'Best Ever' to go by. In search, I began Google-ing and came up with a website which ranks movies between 0.1 <10.0.
   http://www.imdb.com/

With Survival of the fittest in mind, any movie which does't make it to 8.1 or higher can't be worth my time, Right?

The equation to work out its rating on the website is:

      weighted rating (WR) = (V /  V+M) x R + (V /  V+M) x C

R = rating      average for the movie (mean)
V = votes       number of votes for the movie
M = minium votes to be listed in the top 250 (currently 3000)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.9)

for the top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered.

As a bonus, the top 150 are all above 8.1 and if the filter is correct, me thinks, this is a good place to start :).

X = Haven't seen
X = Have seen -can't remember
       X = Seen (watch again ??)
